Screens Statistics

I think that, if everything goes on in the current direction, in about 20-30 years, handwriting will become more of a hobby. Unfortunately, looking at something else than a screen will also become something a bit strange, if it's not already. Just think about some screens statistics...and it will all get really frightening!
Screens Statistics

I don't know how are things looking in other parts of the world, but I am sure most people in Asia, especially in Japan and South Korea, spend a really scary amount of time facing some screen, no matter if the device having the screen it's called TV, LCD monitor, or mobile phone.

If we move to America, we even have a recent news report, coming from AFP. The study they mentioned found that adult Americans spend an average of over 8 hours/day facing some TV, monitor, or other device having a screen! Considering that this is an average, I don't even want to think about the extremes...

Unfortunately, the study didn't include anyone below 18, but it's interesting to mention that it also found out "that people aged 45 to 54 averaged the most daily screen time at just over nine-and-a-half hours."

Below you have some of the highlights of this study:

"- computer video consumption tends to be quite small with an average time of just over two minutes a day.

- Adults spend an average of 6.5 minutes a day with videogame consoles with the number rising to 26 minutes a day among those aged 18-24

- Adults spend an average 142 minutes a day in front of computer screens

- Adults spend an average 20 minutes a day engaged with mobile devices with the highest usage -- 43 minutes a day - among the 18-24 age group"

I think a study about watching the sunrise, the full moon in the sky, and maybe even about the use of handwriting would be a really interesting one, although I don't think anyone would be interested into doing it...

Samsung LCD News

For most LCD users, the type of the panel used in their monitor, TV, or laptop is a secret. Of course that this can be easily revealed, but most of my friends who are in this situation simply don't care. It's just like those having powerful cars but no idea how many valves per cylinder(I know it sounds unlikely, but I also encountered such people a few times)!
Samsung LCD News

Well, you may not know or want to know what's inside your LCD-powered display, but if I tell you that a new and better technology is headed this way, will you be eager to find out more about it? No matter what you say, I'm already on my way...and so is Samsung!

One of the most interesting Samsung LCD news I've heard lately is about the mass production of the industry's first "ultra-slim LCD panels suited for large size TVs." Unfortunately, this is pretty cryptic. Damn, I hate secrecy when it comes to technology for the masses, but that's life...

...so here's the interesting part of the press release - no more secrecy, and Greenpeace will love it:

"Samsung’s edge-lit LED (light emitting diode) backlighting offers lighter weight and thinner designs, which is preferable for wall mounting over bulkier direct-lit LED LCDs. The LED-backlit panels also are mercury-free and consume less energy.

A 55-inch Samsung HDTV with edge-lit LED backlighting uses up to 40 percent less power than conventional LCD TVs.

Just 10.8 millimeters (mm) thick, the new Samsung panels are only a fourth the thickness of conventional LCD panels currently in mass production and come in 40-inch, 46-inch and 55-inch diagonal sizes."

Less power, less space taken up - a really great solution for these tough days, but one question remains - what about the price? No news about that yet, but we'll keep you informed!

The Nanovision Mimo Monitor, Sexier Than Ever!

Published by Codrut Nistor, on March 26th, 2009, in the categories: LCD monitors

Some people are crazy about cars, and I must confess I am not one of the automobile-haters, either, but when it comes to accessories, I think everything should have a limit. After all, a car is that thing that takes you from point A to B, and not a multimedia center on wheels. That's what I think, but it seems the truth is out there...and quite different!
Nanovision MiMo Slim

To me, a high-end PMP with a generous screen or even a netbook should be enough to have in the car, but what about the Nanovision MiMo Slim? This is a pretty sexy gadget for your car, and provides an excellent design, as you can see above, while the single USB cable used to connect it will make the messy wiring just a bad memory. Even more, you can easily disconnect it and take it home to be your secodnary monitor.

Here's the specifications list to help you decide:

Screen Size (diagonal)    7 inch
Aspect Ratio    16:9
Resolution (pixels)    800x480
Colour Configuration    RGB stripe
Backlight    LED
Video Inputs    USB 2.0
Mount Type    Desktop and dashboard (closeable lid)
Power Input     UBB DC 5V 500mA

The touchscreen display will keep you occupied while going off the road, while the horizontal/vertical mode will allow the monitor to swivel by itself as you hit some tree at 60mph. Heh, just kidding about the accident, but those features are there, so it's up to you to use them the right way!

I don't have a car, but that doesn't really matter, because I think the Nanovision MiMo Slim is so sexy, I'll get one regardless of that. After all, why not use it as a secondary display for my messaging tasks? Of course, messaging won't be the end of it, but only the beginning! ;)
