Im no authority on the subject, but as best I know, Light Emitting Diode or LED screens use millions of little emissions of light that pass through individual colors. The crux of LED is that when the screen portrays "black" on the monitor, it actually shuts off the necessary Diodes and creates the "absence of light", or "true black", not a light passing through a black pigment. Therefore, the contrast between the dark and other colors is greater on an LED monitor creating the illusion of a truer and deeper color experience. Hope this helps.

LCD and LED screens only differ in the type of back-light used. So in theory there be no difference with contrast, but because the LED uses less energy than the LCD light source, then it uses less power, and I think it can also make a thinner screen.
LCD and LED screens both have same liquid liquid crystal display (LCD) which block light from the back-light. Performance should be same.
LED TV and monitors are different to OLED or AMOLED used in some phone and other small device. This will be future of TV when costs come down. Even lower power consumption, fantastic colour and contrast.
