Samsung LCD News

For most LCD users, the type of the panel used in their monitor, TV, or laptop is a secret. Of course that this can be easily revealed, but most of my friends who are in this situation simply don't care. It's just like those having powerful cars but no idea how many valves per cylinder(I know it sounds unlikely, but I also encountered such people a few times)!

Well, you may not know or want to know what's inside your LCD-powered display, but if I tell you that a new and better technology is headed this way, will you be eager to find out more about it? No matter what you say, I'm already on my way...and so is Samsung!

One of the most interesting Samsung LCD news I've heard lately is about the mass production of the industry's first "ultra-slim LCD panels suited for large size TVs." Unfortunately, this is pretty cryptic. Damn, I hate secrecy when it comes to technology for the masses, but that's life...

...so here's the interesting part of the press release - no more secrecy, and Greenpeace will love it:

"Samsung’s edge-lit LED (light emitting diode) backlighting offers lighter weight and thinner designs, which is preferable for wall mounting over bulkier direct-lit LED LCDs. The LED-backlit panels also are mercury-free and consume less energy.

A 55-inch Samsung HDTV with edge-lit LED backlighting uses up to 40 percent less power than conventional LCD TVs.

Just 10.8 millimeters (mm) thick, the new Samsung panels are only a fourth the thickness of conventional LCD panels currently in mass production and come in 40-inch, 46-inch and 55-inch diagonal sizes."

Less power, less space taken up - a really great solution for these tough days, but one question remains - what about the price? No news about that yet, but we'll keep you informed!
